Apple recently announced a significant new gaming feature for the iPhone, previously available only on Macs. During the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024 at Apple Park, the tech giant introduced iOS 18, the upcoming iPhone operating system. While the keynote highlighted improvements in phone customization and the introduction of Apple Intelligence features, Apple also revealed the addition of Game Mode to the iPhone.

Key Features and Benefits

Apple’s new Game Mode on iOS 18 aims to improve gaming performance by ensuring consistent frame rates. This feature will be handy during long gaming sessions. Game Mode minimizes background activity on the iPhone, allowing the CPU and GPU to deliver high frame rates continuously. Apple claims this will provide a smoother and more enjoyable gaming experience.

How Game Mode Enhances Gaming Performance

Game Mode, initially introduced for Macs at WWDC 2023, is now coming to iPhones. It reduces audio latency with AirPods and lowers input latency for Bluetooth controllers from brands like PlayStation and Xbox, making them more responsive. According to Apple, this feature ensures consistent performance without lag, regardless of how long you play.

Automatic Activation and Compatibility

Unlike other features that require manual activation, Game Mode automatically turns on when you start a game. However, it is unclear if this automatic feature applies to all games on the iPhone. On Macs, Game Mode works with both new and existing games, but Apple has not yet confirmed if this will be the case for iPhones.

Personalized Spatial Audio for Enhanced Gameplay

In addition to Game Mode, iOS 18 introduces Personalized Spatial Audio for an improved audio experience. Apple demonstrated this feature while playing Need for Speed Mobile. However, this enhanced audio experience is only available with the 2nd generation AirPods Pro.

Upcoming AAA Games for iPhone

Alongside the new gaming features, Apple announced several AAA games arriving on iPhones soon. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard will be the first title available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac on July 2. Additionally, Resident Evil 2 is in development for Apple devices.

While Apple did not specify the iPhone availability for some games, titles such as Sniper Elite 4, Dead Island 2, Control: Ultimate Edition, Frostpunk 2, Valheim, and Palword are set to arrive on Mac. Apple is also partnering with Ubisoft to bring Assassin’s Creed: Shadows to the iPad.
