Are AI Induced Robotic Waiters Taking Over The Hotel Industry ?

Two Panda Deli, a restaurant in Pasadena, California, USA, is the world’s first restaurant to have an ‘employed’  Robotic waiters. The restaurant is owned by Shayne Hayashi and it opened in the year 1983.

The fast-food outlet used two robots – Tanbo R-1 and Tanbo R-2. They used to bring Chinese food like chowmein, spare ribs, and fortune cookies to their customers.

The robots where 4.5 feet tall and weighed 80lb. Every one of these Japanese build robots cost $20,000 who used to tell jokes and play music while serving food.

But even robots are flawed – they sometimes dropped food when they received confused radio signals or stopped on the way of people crossed their roads.

Even after being popular with customer, the droids had few major drawbacks. Confused or interrupted radio signal from nearby police walkie talkies lead to unintentional rude behavior.

India isn’t very distant when it comes to Robot servers. India’s first ever robot server restaurant is in Chennai.

Restaurant named “Robot” (former name ‘Momo’) was founded by Kartik Kannan & Venkatesh Rajendran.

The orders are placed by customers via iPhones & iPads which are kept at each table.

The said message is directly received by real chefs who prepare the food. The food is the brought out and delivered to designated tabled by their allotted robots.

These saree clad Robotic waiters navigate the restaurant smoothly, serving Chinese and Thai food.

As Kannan said in an interview – “In the hotel business, it’s no longer just about food. Its the experience that matters.”

Mr Rajendran & Mr Kannan have also installed a “selfie booth” where patrons can take selfies with their robotic waiters and record their experiences.

Now there are more such restaurants in Jaipur and Delhi – The Yellow House.

Robotic skills in the hotel industry isnt limited to serving tables. They can now mix and serve drinks to perfection.

Bionic Bars – something that can be found on the cruise ships of Royal Caribbean. In 2014 in a cruise ship named “Quantum of seas” this This wonderful sight was first exhibited.

The robots named – Shaken, Stirred, mix and Mingle, have the capacity of making 2 drinks per minute.

In 2017’s July, these droid bartenders where spotted at Tipsy Robot in Las Vegas.

In the year 2016, Huis Ten Bosh amusement park in Nagasaki, Japan used the droids as Robot Chefs. The bots successfully made savoury pancakes, cocktails and donuts in front of the awed customers.
