Android users Might Be Loosing Their Biggest ‘Whatsapp Advantage’

Beginning in December 2023, WhatsApp conversations and media backups on Android devices will be counted against users’ Google account cloud storage, thereby terminating the prior benefit of free storage for Android smartphone users.  This includes the 15GB of free storage that comes with every Google account. Android users will no longer get unlimited space for their WhatsApp chats & media. Throughout the first half of 2024, this modification will be gradually rolled out to all WhatsApp Android users. To resume backups, users will need to free up space in their Google account.

Google provides 15GB of free storage with every Google account, which is triple what Apple provides with iCloud. Users who have reached their storage limit will need to clear up space in order to continue backups. To assist with the transition, Google intends to provide limited, one-time Google One incentives.
