Space heaters are an excellent and cost-effective way to stay warm in a single room without heating the entire house (or apartment). However, not all space heaters are created equal. Some may help heat up a large room, while others are only useful for keeping your personal space warm. Then there are those that make you feel like you are using the hand dryer in a public restroom.

The best space heaters will keep you warm and toasty all winter. A space heater can help you lower your thermostat and save money on your energy bill by concentrating heat in a single room. Some even have an eco-mode to ensure you are using as little energy as possible. A good space heater should be simple to use, energy-efficient, and capable of heating the entire room. At full power, it should not be too loud and will not waste any energy heating the floor. These are the best space heaters on the market.

Vornado AVH10

1. Vornado AVH10

Features

  • Doubles as a cooling fan
  • Can be set to a specific temperature
  • Slightly noisy

After a while, all of the Vornado space heaters begin to resemble one another. The AVH10 stands out from the rest of Vornado’s heaters thanks to its large-number digital display and noticeably stronger fan. The AVH10 has two heat settings and a fan-only mode, so it can be used for both winter heating and summer cooling. The ability to set the AVH10 to a specific temperature is a significant advantage. Rather than using a dial to set it to an arbitrary temperature, you can ensure you are setting the device to the desired temperature.

2. Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP01

Features

  • Whole-room heating
  • It’s a space heater, fan, and air purifier
  • Expensive

When you are looking for a small home appliance, Dyson is almost always mentioned. One of our main reservations about recommending the HP01 is that you are paying for more than you need — it is a fan, a space heater, and an air purifier. While it excels at all of these, the exorbitant price tag may put you off if you already have a fan or an air purifier.

Because the HP01 is a space heater, do not expect it to heat more than a single room. Many people have noted, however, that if your home is small enough, say a one-bedroom apartment, the Dyson can probably do a good job of heating up your entire space. And, because you can choose between long-range heating and personal heating, you can use the HP10 as a personal space heater (though $499 for a personal space heater is a lot). It has the ability to oscillate and tilt, which many space heaters lack, and the remote control is always useful so you do not have to get up to change the fan speeds, settings, or timer.

3. Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater

Features

  • Affordable and effective
  • Good for small rooms only

If you just want something to keep you warm without any frills (and you are not looking for something to win design awards), the Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater is a great buy. Our tester used the heater instead of his home’s furnace and discovered that, despite its small size, it provided adequate heat in any room he needed it in. “I have been pointing it at my feet most days while working from home, which has been a nice creature comfort,” says our tester. “At times, I will use it to heat up my bedroom. Normally, I only use it for an hour or so at a time, but I have left it running all night before without incident.”

There are three heating options and a dial thermostat, which is standard on most space heaters in this price range. You will not have precise temperature control, but you will get used to how hot each setting is over time. Unfortunately, the device lacks tip-over protection, a feature that is almost universal in even the most basic space heaters. While that could be concerning, we can not imagine the heater falling over on its own unless your house shakes while you are away and the device is turned on. It does, however, have an overheat detector and will shut down if it detects that it is becoming too hot.

4. Lasko AW300 Bladeless Heater

Features

  • Features a digital temperature display
  • Takes up a lot of space

The Lasko AW300 has a larger presence than other space heaters, but it looks good and works well. It employs Exclusive Heat Channels, which are trademarked and provide long-range heat projection. Because it oscillates, the heater can ensure that every corner of your room receives adequate heat. Our tester also praised it for being simple to use and offering minor improvements over cheaper alternatives.

It was simple to use, with a digital temperature display and automatic climate control, as opposed to more primitive space heaters that only offer low, medium, and high settings. Because there are no visible heating elements, it is safe to use around the accident-prone. An eight-hour timer, an air filter, and remote control are also included. The Lasko AW300 did not provide the level of heat that our tester had hoped for — “I like a space heater that feels like an afterburner,” he says — but it did effectively heat up his space and looked good doing it.

5. Honeywell UberHeat

Features

  • It will keep you warm without being overly hot
  • Attractive design
  • Loud fan

UberHeat by Honeywell is a simple little device that provides excellent personal space heating. The UberHeat, which could be mistaken for a portable speaker, has two fan speeds and a temperature adjustment dial. It has the ability to keep your body warm or to make a small frigid room bearable. You cannot tell what temperature you are setting the thermostat to, but it is simple to fiddle with it until you reach your desired level of warmth. Our tester was impressed by UbertHeat’s fairly loud fan, but it did not register on a Zoom meeting or a phone call. While not deafening, the fan takes a few moments to get used to before you forget it is there. Its small size and simple design allow it to blend into any room, and with a slew of safety features, including a tip-over switch and a cool-to-touch exterior, it is safe to keep around pets and children.
