The market for laptop/PC operating systems is clearly segmented into two groups: Apple’s macOS and Microsoft Windows. Linux exists, but it’s not likely to be widely used. The likelihood is that the majority of people can be found using these. And China isn’t all that different either in that regard.

According to a South Morning China Post article, Apple’s macOS share increased and is now at 15% in China. Microsoft Windows leads the market with a share of roughly 85%, similar to how it does in most other countries. Now, it seems that the Chinese government hasn’t received this very well. The country wants to reduce its reliance on US technology, but it is obvious that this is not happening given Apple’s increasing market share and Microsoft’s supremacy.

According to the intelligence report, China has stepped up efforts to replace macOS and Windows with its own personal operating system, Kylin. Just keep in mind that Kylin, an operating system, was introduced by the National University of Defence Technology in 2011. It hasn’t really gained popularity, although their navy and government computers make extensive use of it.

According to the article, it is currently developing an open-source Kylin model. The idea is to switch out macOS and Microsoft Windows. Kylinsoft, a division of the state-owned China Electronics Corp., is the company that came up with the idea of creating an open-source version of Kylin. The study also discloses that Kylinsoft has partnered with a few dozen Chinese companies to advance its initiatives. China will now allow programmers and builders to share programmes for the Kylin operating system because it has been become open-source.

How fast and profitably China succeeds in popularizing Kylin OS remains to be seen. Currently, Windows dominates the market in China, though Apple is also making significant headway there.
