Fall Guys is receiving its first significant update to address various technical and graphic issues across all platforms less than a week after being free-to-play. Players using the PlayStation 5 version were unable to send or receive party invites from friends using other platforms including Xbox, PC, or Nintendo Switch until developer Mediatonic released the update early this morning. (Previously, they were instructed to address the problem by downloading Fall Guys for the PS4 again.) Along with removing that obstacle—a big one for a game that’s best played with a few friends—the update for the Nintendo Switch version also resolves problematic character movements. Other characters are no longer drifting eerily through the level like awful GIFs or stop-motion animations. All the included fixes are described in detail by Mediatonic in a post on its official Twitter account.
The transition of Fall Guys to a free-to-play model has given the game a fresh new lease of life. When it was briefly offered for free on PlayStation Plus, it rose to become the pandemic’s family-friendly favourite; however, as time went on, both its appeal and user base decreased. The game now boasts 20 million players after switching to a free-to-play model after being bought by Epic Games, and this was accomplished in the first two days of the relaunch. While Mediatonic is still catching up on some key flaws and glitches in its first week, veteran gamers, of whom I am one, could feel that they are nothing new. I’m really grateful to see the visual changes on the Switch because I’ve frequently kept up with pals during the epidemic while in bean form. It was unexpected to see additional characters with such little animation when I initially started the portable version over the weekend. Although Fall Guys occasionally leans into the cheesy atmosphere and meta humour, the joke quickly becomes tiresome when it appears like the game is broken.
A free-to-play game needs to take immediate action to address these problems, or else its audience may swiftly abandon it in favour of more dependable options. Now, if only all the leftover crowns could be exchanged for the far more beneficial Show-Bucks, as opposed to the meagre Kudos prizes, which are mostly utilised to purchase everyday products.
