Google is planning to manufacture its Pixel smartphones in India from the next quarter. This is a significant shift in strategy as the tech giant aims to expand its footprint and diversify its supply chain away from China.

India is a priority market for Google’s Pixel smartphones, with a massive Android user base presenting a lucrative opportunity for the company. The Indian government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme encourages local production and reduces dependence on imports. By manufacturing in India, Google aims to take advantage of this scheme and reduce reliance on Chinese production facilities.

Google plans to ramp up production facilities in India by the April-June quarter. Initially, it will manufacture the Pixel 8 Pro in South India, with the Pixel 8 expected to be produced in North India by mid-2024. The Pixel 8 Pro features the Google Tensor G3 processor, a 6.7-inch display, and a powerful 50 MP + 48 MP + 48 MP rear camera setup. The standard Pixel 8 offers similar features.

Google aims to sell over 10 million Pixel smartphones in 2024, reflecting the company’s confidence in the Indian market.
