On Wednesday, Google’s Central Artificial Intelligence lab, Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs, a sister company unveiled a more powerful version of AlphaFold.

What is AlphaFold?

AlphaFold is an artificial intelligence technology which helps the scientists to explain and justify the behaviour of the microscopic mechanisms that regulate and drive the cells in the human body. AlphaFold’s early version was released in the year 2020 and this had helped the scientists solve a problem which had been baffling them for more than 50 years. It was called “the protein folding problem.”

How will this technology be useful?

When DeepMind released AlphaFold publicly, the biologists started using the technology as a catalyst for drug discoveries and other related matters. John Jumper, a Google DeepMind researcher said, “It tells us a lot more about how the machines of the cell interact, It tells us how this should work and what happens when we get sick.”

Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis said,” Biology is a dynamic system. You need to understand the interactions between different molecules and structures. This is a step in that direction.”

According to Deniz Kavi, a co-founder and the CEO of Tamarind Bio, “The technology could save months of experimental work and enable research that was previously impossible, this represents tremendous promise.”
