The major cause of the protest that we are seeing and most are confused about is Reddit’s new price policy for third-party app developers that want to use the site’s APIs. As a form of protest against how the website is being administered, thousands of Reddit forums and communities, commonly known as “subreddits,” will become unreachable on Monday, according to the BBC.

A Reddit forum or group known as a subreddit brings together users to debate a certain subject. A number of the most well-known Reddit groups, including r/videos, r/reactiongifs, r/earthporn, and r/lifeprotips, have declared their intention to become private on June 12. The major cause of the protest is Reddit’s new price policy for third-party app developers that want to use the site’s APIs. Concerns regarding the feasibility of their services under the new price model have been voiced by a number of developers.

Reddit, in contrast to other social media platforms, is moderated by the community, and while a few administrators are compensated, unpaid moderators, also known as mods, are frequently the ones that keep the site operational. These moderators keep their subreddit free of comments that are unrelated or unlawful.

The subreddits claim that Reddit is boosting its API fees “to a level that will kill every third party app [on the platform], from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader” in a post announcing the protest. 3,489 subreddits in all, including five of the top ten communities on the website, will be blocked. While some subreddits want to come back after 48 hours, others want to stay secret forever until their issues are sufficiently handled.

One of these subreddits’ moderators told the BBC that the protest was about “strength in numbers.” Reddit might step in if only one subreddit was going private. However, you feel far greater pressure if it represents half of the entire website. Despite the fact that we are performing this job entirely on a voluntary basis and without payment, we do like to take it seriously, he stated.

Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, commented on the outage by stating that the company “needs to be a self-sustaining business”. “We value the actions you and your communities take to draw attention to the needs you have, sometimes even if it means keeping quiet. Reddit has to be a place where anyone can come and feel like they belong, and that responsibility falls on all of us, he added.
