It is anticipated that Apple will provide offline and on-device AI capabilities with iOS 18. Its developer conference, which is set for June, will serve as a preview of the new capabilities.

With relation to the Ajax on-device model included in iOS 17.4, the iPhone manufacturer has been making significant investments in a variety of AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs).

With software tailored to Apple’s silicon chips, Apple engineers are required to maximize the whole stack vertical integration of their platform, even though on-device LLMs are not as powerful as those that run on servers.

On-device LLMs can provide auto-replies to messages and enhance Siri requests, but they do not have the same deep real-time knowledge store as the models that underpin ChatGPT and other AI functions.

What is expected?

Additionally, generative AI tasks may be executed by LLMs operating on devices, and Apple is still able to collaborate with Google to employ Gemini on the server for certain tasks. In the beginning of the year, there were rumors that Apple was in talks with Google to discuss using Gemini to power some generative AI features that would be coming to the iPhone. The company has been lagging behind other smartphone manufacturers that have included AI features on their flagship models. It is said that Apple’s collaboration with third-party providers of AI tools may only last temporarily, as the company may eventually offer some of its own cloud-based generative AI features.

Apple plans to buy over 20,000 AI servers by 2024, according to a post made by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on Medium last year. The fact that Apple does not provide cloud hosting services suggests that it may employ those AI servers to provide cloud-based AI services.

The latest iteration of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and other platforms will be unveiled by Apple during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which runs from June 10 to June 14.

Apple has frequently stated that it has been developing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, which would probably be included into the next platforms. Apple is rumored to be integrating generative AI capabilities for features like text summarization, suggestions, and more into the Messages app and Siri, its virtual assistant.

It’s conceivable that other programs on the Apple platform, including Pages, Keynotes, and Apple Music, will also benefit from AI.
