If you’re already tired of Threads and want to deactivate your account altogether, you’ll have to wait unless you’re prepared to destroy your entire Instagram account. However, there is some optimism on the horizon because Meta, Instagram’s parent company, is currently working on a method to detach Threads from Instagram accounts. This information was revealed by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri in an article published on Thursday.

Threads, Meta’s freshly released Twitter rival, makes use of Instagram’s account structure. When users sign up for Threads, they may transfer their Instagram accounts to the app. However, it establishes a reliance between the two services, making it impossible for users to delete their Threads account without destroying their Instagram account. This might be a turnoff for people who have been using Instagram for years and are concerned about losing their material.

According to Mosseri’s post, Meta is thinking of developing a tool that would allow users to remove their Threads account while keeping their Instagram account. Fortunately is no timetable for when this functionality will be available. Meanwhile, Mosseri offers a different strategy. By cancelling your Threads account, you can opt to hide your Threads profile & content. Go to the profile tab, press the settings icon (two lines), pick “Account,” select “Deactivate profile,” and then press the “Deactivate Threads profile” button.

It’s vital to understand that deactivating one’s Threads profile is only a temporary solution. While it conceals your profile, threads, responses, and likes, when you log back in, your account will be automatically reactivated, as described on an Instagram help website. Mosseri also emphasises that you have the choice of deleting specific postings or making your account private.

Threads was introduced for iOS and Android by Instagram on Wednesday, and it has already had over 30 million sign-ups, according to Mark Zuckerberg. However, the app appears to have been hurried to release in order to benefit from Twitter’s current volatility, and as a result, it lacks important functionality such as instant messages (DMs), a following feed, and even hashtags. Mosseri recognises this in a second article, stating that these “basic” capabilities are in the works but cautioning that implementing these enhancements would take some time.
