A free streaming video-on-demand subscription is one incentive that the majority of cellular providers provide to entice you to join their network. However, AT&T will no longer provide HBO Max to new subscribers and hasn’t made any other changes to the programme. This week, the provider covertly dropped its top-tier Unlimited Elite package for new customers and released a new one without HBO Max, according to Next TV.

The new top package, named Unlimited Premium, has the same price as the previous one for a single line: $85 per month. Premium users receive unlimited call, text, and data, 4K streaming, and no slowdowns – even if they use a lot of data, just as with the now-grandfathered Elite plan (a promise AT&T introduced for its priciest tier last July). You receive 50GB of mobile hotspot data rather than 40GB, but there is no streaming video package included. According to a statement from AT&T to Next TV, “HBO Max is a terrific service, but we always experiment with the services we provide our consumers to give them the best value.”

Even though AT&T no longer encourages binge-watching, it does now provide several subscription services for gamers. In addition to giving users six months of Google Stadia Pro for more than a year and continuing to do so today, AT&T also began offering members six months of GeForce Now, a competing game streaming service from Nvidia, in January (though it requires a separate signup). Due to a collaboration with Google, AT&T cellular users may presently play two specialised cloud games using a web browser. A streamable version of Control was also introduced by AT&T last month, while Batman: Arkham Knight is still accessible until June 15th. Additionally, even broader cloud gaming ambitions have been hinted at, which may allow gamers to play a game for free while keeping track of their progress.

Even with the games, it’s difficult to deny how AT&T and HBO Max enabled the business to compete against rivals like T-Mobile and Verizon, who also offer Netflix and Disney Plus, respectively. However, given that HBO is no longer owned by AT&T, its discontinuation makes logical. In 2020, while the carrier still controlled Time Warner and, hence, HBO, the free HBO Max promotion first began. However, as HBO is now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, AT&T would have to pay someone else for the service. Additionally, a significant motivation to provide HBO Max for free is no longer there because AT&T is no longer concerned with growing the number of HBO Max subscribers.
