Nowadays, children prefer to stay indoors for gaming rather than getting outside to engage in physical activities. Most parents assume that the video game is harmful for their child, however, new research suggests that playing video games can help your child develop Cognitive skills.

Researchers conducted research for 9,855 kids

The researchers chose 9,855 kids to complete the research. The children chosen were from the 9-10 age group. As per the research, kids spend about two and a half hours per day watching TV or online videos. An hour playing video games and about half an hour surfing social media.

Around two years later, researchers conducted another study for around five thousand kids. Kids were assigned comprehension, a task focusing on memory, and a visual-spatial task. It was observed that children spending more time on video games than the average, had an advantage of 2.5 IQ points. These kids had better creative thinking and self-control than the children who spent around average time on video games.

Research did not differentiate between video game types

It is important to note that the study fails to differentiate between video game types. Neuroscientist Torkel Klingberg stated “Our results support the claim that screen time generally doesn’t impair children’s cognitive abilities and that playing video games can help boost intelligence”.
The study does not claim any impact on physical activity, sleep, or their well-being due to screen time. It is based only on the intelligence level of a child. However, many factors affect children’s development, and play a key role in children’s life. Socio-economic factor also affects their intelligence level. However, it affect children’s growing IQ level distinctively.

Cognitive development is essential for a child, especially in the modern world. A good intelligence level would make a child clever and teach him to live in a fast-paced world.
