YouTube has just become the top grossing app on the App Store. First reported by TechCrunch, until now the app has only hit as high as the top 3 spot. App Store intelligence firm Sensor Tower first spotted the data leading to the major achievement, noting that YouTube has hit number one but only in the US. The official App Store has removed their top grossing list, but Sensor Tower claims to have access to such data.

YouTube has been steadily rising in the app store charts for a while, but it was the launch of their subscription service YouTube Red in 2015 that vaulted the app into the top 6 spot after only a month. Other factors to their rise in the top app list include the emergence of unlimited data plans, cord-cutting, and the launching of features that promote user-engagement (Messaging, Community).
